# Tag the link. Count who it brought.

> Tag a link to your site with utm_source, utm_campaign or ref, and see the visitors it brought on the Dashboard. Newsletter clicks are tagged for you.

A link you share on a podcast, a poster or another newsletter can carry a tag. **PixelGlass counts every visit under the tag it arrived with**, so you see what each place sent you.

## By hand, in the admin

1. Add a tag to the link you share: yoursite.com/spring-guide?utm_source=instagram&utm_campaign=spring.
2. For a short tag, use ref instead: yoursite.com/spring-guide?ref=podcast.
3. Open **Dashboard › Web traffic**. **Sources** lists each utm_source or ref, and **Campaigns** lists each utm_campaign, in visitors.
4. Press a source or a campaign to filter the whole tab by it, and see the pages its visitors read.

A tag wins over the page a visitor came from. Newsletter clicks need no tag: they arrive as the newsletter source, under the post's own campaign. The Dashboard's Campaigns tab is your emails; tagged links are on Web traffic.

## With your agent

> Give me links to my spring guide tagged for Instagram, my podcast notes and the Saturday flyer.

> Add a tagged link to my site, with ref=partner-swap, at the end of the post I am writing for the partner newsletter.

The tools it calls: `list_posts`, `get_post`, `start_editing_post`, `edit_post`, `finish_editing_post`.

No tool reads the Dashboard, so your agent cannot count the visits. It writes the tagged links, and you read the results on Web traffic.

## Examples

- **Which episode sent readers.** A history podcast puts a link with ref=ep42 in each episode's notes. **The episodes that send readers are the ones it makes more of.**
- **A poster with a short link.** A bakery prints its menu post's address with ref=window on a poster, and counts the visits the window brought.
- **A swap with another writer.** Two newsletters recommend each other with utm_source tags, and each sees under Sources how many readers the other sent.

## Questions

### How do I track campaign links on PixelGlass?

Add utm_source, and utm_campaign if you like, or ref to a link to your site. PixelGlass counts each visit under its tag, and the Dashboard's Web traffic tab lists them under Sources and Campaigns.

### Does PixelGlass read UTM tags?

Yes. PixelGlass reads utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, and ref as a short source. The source and the campaign are lists on the Web traffic tab, each a filter.

### Are newsletter clicks tagged on PixelGlass?

Yes. A click from a PixelGlass newsletter into your site arrives as the newsletter source, by email, under the post's slug as its campaign, unless you tagged the link yourself.

### Do I need cookies to track campaigns?

No. PixelGlass reads the tag from the address a visitor lands on, with no cookie.
